Actually, it began something like two years ago, with regional elimination games and some 180 national teams playing, I think. And ended up with the 48 finalistas.

Spain defeated reigning champion Argentina and is the new football World Cup Champion. And will be for the next four years. 48 national teams started the tournament that began on June 11th, I believe. It was played in Canada, USA and Mexico.
