Never eaten milkweed. But, did you know that the monarchs that wintered in Mexico or CA are not the same ones that reurn there a year later. In fact they are separated by 4 generations. If just one of those generations is damaged, it really affects the numbers.

We had more monarchs last summer than we had had in several years..they almost disappeared from Montreal for a few years, but no one knew why. I got some good pics of them last summer, closeup on flowers. They are so gorgeous! Nope I never tried eating milkweed SuzyQ.. with or without bacon.. who knows..might not be bad! I think my grandma used to do kale and bacon..probably be similar.

strawb and donnamusica, your comments reminded me that the Potawatomi Indians with whom I worked on their reservation in Mayetta, K back in the 60's cooked and ate milkweed. I can't quite remember the taste after all these years. It was good but different. I vaguely remember there being bacon added for flavor. Do either of you eat it? I don't believe there are monarchs in K, though. We have monarchs here in CA that migrate to several places for the eucalyptus trees. I got a great close-up pic of one once when it landed on my pant leg and stayed for quite awhile. I was forced to stay and enjoy them for a lot longer than I had planned -- really no problem -- since I didn't want to take a chance on it getting injured if I tried to get it to fly away.

Sometimes chasing emm has it's rewards. Just have to take an easy game and make it difficult.

I was about to say earlier how nice it was playing early and having emm chase me instead of the other way around. Alas I'm back to chasing her.

Oh, just one more thing then I'll be quiet. Leelamaria, we are also enjoying our citris this time of year. We are loaded with ruby red grapefruit from our back yard tree. Unbelievably sweet.

Yes donnamusica! the adult monarchs love the milkweed flower nectar too! Northern Texas sometimes get snow; mostly in the panhandle. San Antonio and South, almost never. South Texas gets thousands of what we refer to as "Winter Texans." Retired people who come down for the winter, then return home for the summer. The best of both worlds.
