I believe that we play the game often first time by guy instinct.  Then go back at it again using ideas about what
to do.  The ideas are what gets me higher moves.

You have explained why some of us get lowest moves on first try -- never to be equalled again. 

I need to continuously remind myself to use the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle with these games.   I get a relatively good low moves and make changes to find lower moves.   This just complicates matters and I eventually forget how I got my original score.
